We will be celebrating (along with a lot of other folks in Memphis) the release of Digital Lows from Memphis hip-hop/surf/psych artist Cities Aviv on Friday night at the Hi-Tone Cafe. The new digital album, released through Fat Sandwich Records, marks the first full-length collection of Cities Aviv’s tracks.
If you follow this site, you know that Aviv’s work has been a regular feature around here, and I’ve been trying to put things out to you as they’ve become available for you to hear them. Featuring a couple of guest vocal appearances from Fille Catataonique (whom we expect will be in the house for the show), the album showcases all the songs that have been collected and a few new ones which have been only heard in Aviv’s live show.
What makes Cities Aviv so unique is how he successfully marries indie rock beats, deep psychedelic soul grooves and unashamed lyrical prowess. He goes in from the moment he grabs a microphone & surfs right past all the bullshit. You might be partying to his records, but his records aren’t simply ‘party records’ — his songs deal with drugs, sex, fame, money (like a lot of hip-hop does), but he often comes across as the outsider looking inward, finding some kind of a guiding light between aspiration and success.
In case you’re not up to speed, I’d suggest that before you come down to the show you should peep all the tracks — which he’s giving away as a free download (listen below). Co-signing this album 100%? Yes I am. Much like his music, this fine poster is in 3-D, so pop on your glasses and surf with us. SURF.
