While I wait for the phone to quit ringing (it’s been that kind of day here), I thought I would continue to sing the praises of Scotland’s rich music landscape by mentioning the orchestral hip-hop of David Jack. Long known in the underground as a beat freak who takes things to a surreal and eerie edge, David has released two critically-acclaimed albums, Texture Freak (which was in heavy rotation on the late great John Peel’s BBC radio show), and the album from which this haunting hip-hopstrumental is taken, Without Vocabulary. Not unlike RJD2 in the states, Jack’s reputation for creating nuanced grooves and sampladelic freeform precedes him and lives up to all the hype. On Without Vocabulary, Jack recruited famed Edinburgh mixologist DJ Extra and Stuart Braithwaite of the band Mogwai to put forward this collection worthy of a million replays that you might have missed. Give this track, “The Lonliest Monk” (yeah I know, “loneliest”/”lonliest”, that’s what the CD says all you spelling beez) a proper spin then grab up the collection from which it comes. Stay tuned if you like this, for I will soon have his latest collection to review entitled Iron Out San Francisco.
