Hey kids, have you behaved and done what Bethanne told you to do? You should have. She knows her shit — recognize, bitchez. So, I’m sitting here in Los Angeles having a great time but remembering how much I hate it here. Every time someone walks into the room, it’s never normal — it’s a “grand entrance”. Yes, I actually am looking at you — and thinking what an idiot you are because you’re dying to be noticed. Now that I noticed you, I’m going to stare at the floor some more and dream of being someplace where I’m not jaded and uninterested in everything around me. Hope you don’t mind.
At least out of this trip, I’ve managed to get my hands on the new Yo La Tengo album due September 12th from Matador entitled I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass (there are no MP3’s of Yo La Tengo in this post so if that’s why you’re here, I’m sorry to tease). The first 9 minutes are absolutely killing me — amazing psychedelic rock. I need to process the whole album before I jump out of the tree and say how effing brilliant it is. Oh wait, what’s this? It’s a quirky and totally different Yo La Tengo than the last song on the album — is this Ben Folds Five? Just kidding….oh hang on is this Prince? No…no, it’s Sufjan Stevens…wow. This new Yo La Tengo is more bipolar than Anna Nicole Smith when she’s off the Trimspa and the valiums. That’s not a bad thing, mind you. It’s embarassingly good if that’s possible. Ok, but this is not a post about the new Yo La Tengo record. Hang on, it’s Belle & Sebastian….no, nope that’s Yo La Tengo. Okay, anyways…
While on my escapades, I managed to end up at the Music Box where I was treated to a show from my darlings The Futureheads and French Kicks. I picked up a copy of their tour-only EP which contains three unreleased songs, one of which I’m told will never be released — French Kicks that is. From the Music Box, we traversed the 101 and ended up at Spaceland (me and my buddy Chris) where we managed to get completely blown away by the band Monsters Are Waiting. I don’t know what to say here…add The Divinyls to Blondie, subtract the blonde and add some psychedelic drugs and you’ve got Monsters Are Waiting. They are, without a doubt, one of the best new bands I’ve laid eyes and ears on recently. The lead singer is not only smokingly gorgeous, she’s charismatic, sexy, friendly, and downright amazing. Their cover of “I Wanna Be Adored” by The Stone Roses left me yearning for more. You pretty much can’t go wrong with them unless you have no pulse and, having never not had a pulse in my life, I can’t tell you how horrible that would be.
You can get your hands on their new album, Fascination probably by clicking on this link right here. And just to prove I’m not talking a bunch of hogwash and gobbledygook, I’m gonna lay the song “Last Goodbye” on you to freak out over. Monsters Are Waiting is clearly one of the best new bands and now I can admit to having witnessed the future first-hand. P.S. this is not a Jeff Buckley cover, get off my blog now, i love you or at least 38% of everything about you.
