Slowly but surely, the machinery of Magnetic Fields is cranking back up. With their new album Realism set for release, they've decided to embark on a wee bairn of a tour. Check out these tour dates -- Continue Reading...
The legendary Gil-Scott Heron, the black radical poet, musician, composer, author, purveyor of spoken word and singer (whom many refer to lovingly with titles like "the black Bob Dylan" and "the godfather of rap"), has been long presumed dead due to his conspicuous absence from music. Though kept alive through retrospectives and reverential referencing of him by those whom he influenced, Scott-Heron himself seemingly vanished 15 years ago after an experimental and efficacious music career which spanned four decades. Like several of his contemporaries, Scott-Heron accrued a tremendous following and much of his success during the 1970's and 1980's, ...
If you take a look at the recently-published list of Time Magazine's "50 Best Inventions of 2009", you will find many technologically significant inventions -- NASA's missles, a racing car made entirely out of food, and even a human-powered vending machine. Among these inventions, a surprising (and deserved) addition has appeared: the YouTube remix projects of Israeli musician & composer Kutiman as seen in his prodigious website, ThruYOU. ThruYOU, completed in just two months time, is a sweeping work of musical "found art", deftly and intelligently remixed into miniature funk masterpieces. Ophir Kutiel, better known to the ...
I'm still on the fence about this, but the video, which leaked today, is pretty good IMO. But uh... Lady Gaga though? I have tried so hard to "get" Lady Gaga. I guess it comes down to this: I have to see her live to "get her". Meh, dance y'all. If you came searching for insightful commentary or review on this song, it will never exist in this post. Sometimes, I post things purely out of intrigue. This seems to me a standard Beyonce pop song. It's aiight.
If you were one of DJ AM's millions of fans, there was no way to think of him without recognizing his public appeals regarding his personal struggles with addiction. At the height of his fame as DJ, Adam Goldstein was irrepressible and tireless in his quest to help those suffering from addiction, through both financial contributions and personal counseling of those seeking to conquer their addiction and alcoholism. His death at the hands of drugs coincided with the completion of his impassioned MTV reality show Gone Too Far, which began airing on Thursday nights this past October.
But one ...
We just got news about a benefit, at which Juan MacLean will DJ, to take place on November 20th at San Francisco's Mezzanine nightclub in tribute to Jerry Fuchs. Jerry, the drummer for !!! (Chk Chk Chk), Maserati, LCD Soundsystem and The Juan MacLean to name just a few, died tragically last week at the age of 34. I'm pasting this straight from the press release.
Juan MacLean will DJ a benefit show in memory and in tribute to friend, band mate and legendary drummer Jerry Fuchs, who passed away in an unfortunate accident in the early hours of ...
(Editor's note: this originally appeared on Loudersoft on 4 March 2009. I've updated the post to include MP3's of the tracks so that, hopefully, it will pull people from MP3 search engines to discover Kutiman and his site. It's definitely my favorite website of 2009 and, without a doubt, one of my favorite experiences of the past decade. If you're visiting here from The Hype Machine, please be sure to go back and 'love' the songs you love by clicking here. Thanks.)
The full story on Thru-You, video and MP3's after the jump.

The ephemeral Brooklyn indie pop trio of Annie, Erika, and Heather make up Au Revoir Simone, and if you're here you're likely already a fan. Those wonderful Dutch ghettotechin' blip wizardy-wizards in Le Le hit us up today with a perfect hot mess -- remixes of a track called "Disco Monster" from their last EP, Marble. Le Le's super-human electro-insanities and skin-tight grooves can be heard in mixes from Erol Alkan, Busy P, DJ Medhi, and a whole mess of other floor traffic controllers the world over.
If you can get your hands on a copy of this on vinyl, you should: it comes packed in the Parra-designed original sleeve you see above -- wait, did you just ask me "Who's Parra?" Uh, ...
I don't know anything at all about O'Spada, but I intend to find out more. The Stockholm act's soulful funk, reminiscent of Prince, Rick James' production style or the Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis grooves of the 80's, is getting some heavy attention and rotation. Apparently their last single "Time" got out in the world and received some praise and attention from THE FADER, Monocle, BBC Radio One's DJ Annie Mac, and they've been Band of the Day in The Guardian.
Check out this new track, "Ten Strikes". We're digging its distinctly 80's retro-electro feel, and it's purposeful ...
