Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings on Dinner With The Band
Do you like food? Of course you do, you gotta eat. Do you like music? Well, you’re reading a music blog — I sure hope so. At the intersection of food and music is the IFC original series DINNER WITH THE BAND. An inspired creation born from the minds of producers Darin & Greg Bresnitz, the six preview episodes of the series air each Tuesday night from November 24th until December 29th at 11pm EST/PST on IFC. Charlotte Gainsbourg – Heaven Can Wait from Charlotte Gainsbourg on Vimeo.
The new video from Charlotte Gainsbourg, “Heaven Can Wait”, is ostensibly the first single from her Beck-produced album IRM, due for release in very early 2010. Enjoy.
A brief, though impressive, list of showcasing music acts at SXSW 2010 have been posted on the SXSW website.
The majority of the 200 names we saw look to be either international artists or Austin-based. However, we noticed some favorites in the mix:
– I Fight Dragons
– Japandroids
– 9th Wonder
– Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter
– We Are Scientists
– Arms
More names will obviously begin to trickle out after the holiday, but so far, nobody from Memphis has appeared. We’ll let you know.
In any event we plan to see you there, so maybe you should click here and see if you made the list. (HT: Gorilla vs. Bear)

The standard-bearers for trip-hop, Bristol natives Massive Attack, have announced complete details on their soon-to-be released new album. Entitled Heligoland, the album will see release on 8 February 2010. Their first studio album in seven years, Heligoland is seen as one of the most hotly anticipated releases of 2010.
Ranked among the most influential bands to come out of British music in the 1990’s, Massive Attack had long been believed to reach their creative peak with 1998’s seminal release, Mezzanine. Creative fallout and personnel changes within the band left founding members Robert Del Naja (3D) and Grant Marshall (Daddy G) to trudge forward. The band’s 2003 release, 100th Window, though critically well-received, has long been speculated to be, in reality, the first solo work of now-accomplished soundtrack producer 3D. Regardless, one constant remains: Massive Attack’s popularity as live artists has never waned to any serious degree. They have remained a successful touring and performing act the world over.
The litany of guest appearances on Heligoland is impressive: there are substantial contributions on Heligoland from vocalists Martina Topley-Bird and Hope Sandoval, Gorillaz and Blur frontman Damon Albarn, Guy Garvey (from the band Elbow), Tunde Adebimpe and the return of legendary Reggae vocalist Horace Andy.
In addition to production from the band themselves, Tim Goldsworthy of DFA lends his help with production duties on the album. The tracks which appeared on their recently-released EP Splitting the Atom will also appear on the album, songs which give strong indication that Massive Attack have entered yet another phase of depth and creativity worth listening to and noticing.
Tracklisting for Heligloland:
01) Pray For Rain – featuring Tunde Adebimpe
02) Babel – featuring Martina Topley-Bird
03) Splitting The Atom – featuring Robert del Naja/Grant Marshall/Horace Andy
04) Girl I Love You – featuring Horace Andy
05) Psyche – featuring Martina Topley-Bird
06) Flat Of The Blade – featuring Guy Garvey
07) Paradise Circus – featuring Hope Sandoval
08) Rush Minute – featuring Robert del Naja
09) Saturday Come Slow – featuring Damon Albarn
10) Atlas Air – featuring Robert del Naja
A new video from one of our favorites, Orenda Fink (O+S, Azure Ray) has a new album out on Saddle Creek. This video comes from that album. Enjoy.
A breakdance classic, this got played on K-97 in Memphis *ALL* the time when I was growing up. If you don’t have it already, well — now you do.
The duo of Olaf Hilgenfeld and Iftah Gabbai is definitely not your run-of-the-mill techno, disco or jazz. So then, color me intrigued by Skinnerbox & their unusual (and efficient marriage) of disparate styles, particularly when it matches so clearly with the musical calico I’m hearing out of European electronic music lately.
There’s a taste of Richie Hawtin meets Mark Farina meets 808 State in these songs. Do I have your attention?
Under the surface, there are also tastes of Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones influence in this particular collection, dotted with edgy Grace Jones/Nina Hagen/Lene Lovich-esque references (thanks to the vocals of occasional guest Elle P) — an embrace of experimental 80’s synth/Moog influences enmeshed with a love of Italo-Disco and New Wave lives in every corner of this music, it’s easy to fall in love with instantly and, later, return to analyze it’s cleverness. Even with it’s technoodling, Skinnerbox’s recordings here are (at their core) jazz music — completely experimental, and definitely out there.
Check out these tracks, courtesy of the band themselves. If you dig it, be sure and check out this terrific live set of theirs from Paris in October of 2009.

I guess we’re going to start off this Music Monday with a sweet electro track from the remix team of Luca C & Brigante. The remix of Ali Love’s new single, “Diminishing Returns” (which is out in limited release) comes from his debut album, due in 2010. You may not know Ali Love off the bat, but if you heard the Chemical Brothers’ smash “Do It Again”, you’ve definitely heard his pipes. Enjoy this free track & LETS GO.

The 9th Annual Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival has confirmed the dates of June 10- 13, 2010.

For three years now, we’ve watched as Beach House has gone from humble, subtly hypnotic Baltimore slack-key-core twosome to a fully realized and accomplished recording act. With the forthcoming release of Teen Dream on their new home label of Sub Pop, the team of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally will have completed a transformation that has allowed them to take on a new sense of direction in the music and in their lives.
Check out this track, “Norway”, from the forthcoming album & head over to Sub Pop for further details on the band and their new record.
