MSNBC is reporting that a lear jet containing former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and one of Hollywood's favorite deejays, DJ AM (real name Adam Goldstein) crashed early this morning near Columbia, SC.
Four people were killed in the crash, identified as Charles Still, 25 of Los Angeles, Chris Baker (best known as Travis Barker's Publicist), 29, and the two pilots, Sarah Lemmon, 31, and James Bland, 52. Witnesses on the scene indicated that at the time of the crash, both Goldstein and Barker were seen fleeing the wreckage engulfed in flames from head to ...
I'm short on words this week since I've been spending much of it updating & changing back-end things on the site. Thankfully, I had Steve Winwood's seminal 1981 album Arc of a Diver on hand to keep me focused, and in particular this song -- "Night Train" -- which, if memory serves me, actually appeared on a 1978 release of his and resurfaced here a couple of years later. Of course, the album was a huge hit, as was the single "While You See A Chance", another song of his that I can never get enough of. ...
And the hits just keep on coming.....
Among the ranks of America's greatest soul songwriters and composers, few stand taller than Norman Whitfield, who died at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles after a lengthy illness. His contributions to American soul music count among the most prized and revered. His studio experimentations with sound shaped a blueprint for the significant, powerful changes in the Motown sound and the sound of northern soul that took place in the 1970's.
Whitfield shared both the producer helm and co-songwriting duties on a number of Motown staples with Barrett Strong, producing a string of ...
I am getting geared up for my weekly and I've been listening to this way-out-of-print vinyl rip of New York City jazz-R&B-soul vocalist extraordinaire Sylvia Striplin's Roy Ayers-produced 1981 funk-disco outing Give Me Your Love that (frankly) I don't think gets much play these days. Well, if you've ever played Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, you've heard her on VCFL so...maybe a little play?
Sometimes that's the best way to find out about new music: randomly. I mean, there's just so much to digest in the world of music that you can't possibly hear it all at one time. ...
I can't just sit back and look at the current state of affairs without needing to try and feel good for a second. You read this blog? You're probably someone who shares a deep sense of affliction right now based on the current state of affairs. I don't want to seem like some kind of a neo-hippie or a flipster (a flowery hipster), but I can take the heat for that -- what the world needs now is love.
I don't care where it comes from, what brings it about or how we get there. It seems ...
The new Bloc Party album Intimacy will be released in physical form by Wichita/Atlantic Records on October 27th, just a week after this song, "Talons", is physically released as the first single. You already know (if you purchased the album's digital release) that this track is not included in the digital version of the album -- but is a value-added bonus for those of us who purchased the digital album. The sound, both on the album and the single, marks a noticeable departure from the Bloc Party sound of recent memory, demonstrating that they are sharing a greater ...

It should come as no surprise to anyone that's ever been a fan of Sonic Youth to hear that, according to the Matablog, the noise rock pioneers will finally release a new album via Matador Records in 2009. The as-yet untitled album, the band's 16th, will commence recording some time this fall. The band's 2006 release, Rather Ripped, hailed by fans and critics alike as ranking "among the current decade's best", was their final for longtime record label Geffen Records. After the jump, check out some tour dates for the band, both together and solo.
