DJ SHADOW SIGNS TO UNIVERSAL RECORDS
New Solo Album From Influential Producer To Hit Streets This Summer
(New York, NY) Universal Records has signed acclaimed hip hop stylist DJ Shadow, who is currently putting the finishing touches on a new album scheduled to be released later this summer. “I’m thrilled to join the team at Universal. Finally, after years of feeling like an orphan I feel like I finally have a home,†says DJ Shadow (Josh Davis.) “As someone who has been a fan of DJ Shadow for the past 10 years, it’s an honor to have him ...
At the intersection of RJD2 Blvd. and Blueprint Ave. lives Soul Position, a hip-hop fusion of scud truth missiles and precious layered funk that makes you want to jump up and shout. "In this corner, we have the undisputed champs of hip-hop," states Blueprint in the song "The Extra Mile", continuing onwards by saying "versus everything that sucks about music in the opposite corner." I think that statement pretty much sums up Things Go Better with RJ & AL, the third truly banging hip-hop album I've listened to this year (the first two being Spank Rock's YoYoYoYoYo and ...
Reports from people who were at SXSW this year that saw anything worthwhile all mentioned the same name: ¡Forward, Russia! A stellar live act direct from the musically-firebranded Leeds, UK, ¡Forward, Russia! are an amalgamation of sounds I love -- post-funk dance punk that slips the listener in and out of consciousness as they writhe about the dance floor in uncontrolled angst-ridden ecstasy. Their new album, Give Me A Wall is preparing for release in just a couple of weeks and man oh man, you people are in for a treat. Fans of Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand ...
In accordance with this great post on Fluxblog featuring a track from the new Eugene Mirman record out soon on Sub Pop, I went looking for something on YouTube that would add to the joy. Lo and behold, I found the one and only Aziz Ansari AND Eugene Mirman doing a very funny bit about his love for the Tamil Tigress, M.I.A. I laughed really damn hard, maybe you will too. If you're in Los Angeles tonight, be sure to check out Aziz's appearance at the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theater in "The Benson Interruption" at 9:30pm.
Can't get ...
Starting on April 28th, Neil Young will begin streaming his highly-anticipated new release Living With War on his website, NeilYoung.Com. As reported by Stereogum, there's a blog set up for the album which you can read by clicking here that has lyrics and tracklisting for the album. Early reports from people who have posted on the blog describe the album and the artist they're hearing as "Simply put, Neil Young rocks the house like a mother f**ker on a mission from God. Neil is focused, angry and on target." This is ostensibly good news for fans, so ...
With thanks to Keith from TTIKTDA for ruining my day and also causing me to laugh out loud, take a visit over to YTMND (You're The Man Now, Dog) and witness the glorious mashup of Bill Cosby, Franz Ferdinand, and someone else strangely familiar.....
As the man primarily responsible for the etherial sound of Cocteau Twins, Robin Guthrie paved the way for dozens of artists seeking the haunting and expressive beauty of his former band -- Slowdive, Ride, and My Bloody Valentine chief among them. With his second instrumental outing, Continental, Guthrie has steeped himself in the groundbreaking soundscapes that made Cocteau Twins famous and rebirthed them lovingly into this 10-song collection. If you've ever been a fan of Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, Ride, or My Bloody Valentine, you would do well to pay attention and listen. This is imaginative and inventive ...
Bruce Springsteen? Music blogs don't need to write about Bruce Springsteen! He's a legend, he's got all the press he needs, right? I disagree, and I'll tell you why. Bruce Springsteen's collections of late have proven to be hit-and-miss, and I don't think there's a rock critic in the world who would disagree. People still associate him with Born In The U.S.A., seeing it as a positive athemic allegory to the glory of the U.S.A. But if you've read further (and I know some of you have), you would know that the success of ...
A buddy of mine tipped me off to this trio from Geneva, Switzerland's first full-length album for AI Records entitled Mount Age. AI Records, known for it's IDM stylings rather than the neo-90's housey ambience of Sinner DC, distributes from the band a freshman recording that is both hit and miss. When it hits, it's incredible. When it misses, it doesn't really detract from the excellence of the rest of the album -- but the misses do feel out of place. Sinner DC have a multi-tiered production style and an experimental vibe about them that shows ...
