Charlotte Gainsbourg – Heaven Can Wait

Charlotte Gainsbourg – Heaven Can Wait from Charlotte Gainsbourg on Vimeo.

The new video from Charlotte Gainsbourg, “Heaven Can Wait”, is ostensibly the first single from her Beck-produced album IRM, due for release in very early 2010. Enjoy.

I’m still on the fence about this, but the video, which leaked today, is pretty good IMO. But uh… Lady Gaga though? I have tried so hard to “get” Lady Gaga. I guess it comes down to this: I have to see her live to “get her”. Meh, dance y’all. If you came searching for insightful commentary or review on this song, it will never exist in this post. Sometimes, I post things purely out of intrigue. This seems to me a standard Beyonce pop song. It’s aiight.

O'Spada - Ten Strikes

I don’t know anything at all about O’Spada, but I intend to find out more. The Stockholm act’s soulful funk, reminiscent of Prince, Rick James’ production style or the Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis grooves of the 80’s, is getting some heavy attention and rotation. Apparently their last single “Time” got out in the world and received some praise and attention from THE FADER, Monocle, BBC Radio One’s DJ Annie Mac, and they’ve been Band of the Day in The Guardian.

Check out this new track, “Ten Strikes”. We’re digging its distinctly 80’s retro-electro feel, and it’s purposeful similarity to Teena Marie, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam and Janet Jackson is off the hook. Get this, do it now.

The Bravery - Stir The Blood (2009)

You tell me what you think for a change. As the title suggests, I’m posting this without listening to it.

The Bravery – “The Spectator” (right click to download)

The new album by The Bravery, Stir The Blood, comes out on December 1. With the album’s first single “Slow Poison” being played on radio stations throughout the land, the song “The Spectator,” which will be on Stir The Blood, will also be released tomorrow on The Vampire Diaries soundtrack.

Those Darlins SXSW 2009

At this year’s SXSW music festival, I was very impressed during my opportunity to catch Those Darlins at the Brooklyn Vegan party. Hailing from just outside Nashville, the trio of Kelly, Jessi and Nicki Darlin bring a party atmosphere to the stage by melding styles that may not seem to go together on first glance. Those Darlins make a particular brand of indie pop music, one unselfconsciously informed by their love of indie rock and country music — tailor-made for you to dance and sing along with.

If you’re in Memphis tomorrow night (Tuesday, November 10th), you should make it a point to catch up with them at The Hi-Tone where they’ll be appearing with perennial Goner favorites King Khan & BBQ Show. You’ll be glad you decided to head out on a Tuesday night & we’ll see you there.

My thoughts on the death of Michael Jackson

I know that I haven’t updated this blog in months. Without taking time to get into a lengthy explanation as to why, the death of Michael Jackson has given me a reason to update. While I don’t know what the future of Loudersoft is right now, it was important to me to share this with you now.

It has taken me days to sit down and write these thoughts to share with you, and I still don’t even know where to begin. I expect any number of you who read this to simply not understand where my mind is. He meant something different to nearly everyone, no matter what part or parts of his life you’ve been affected by or how.

I have laid awake nights thinking to myself how beautiful heaven must be today now that Michael’s pain is at an end. Those of us here on Earth, we are left to consider the many gifts Michael bestowed upon the world, and, in spite of his eccentric and at times inexplicable behavior, how insensitively the media treated him throughout the last years of his life.

Last year, I procrastinated heavily. I think there were a lot of good records that came out the last couple of years, but I started to think that for every record that came out, there was an equal number of these “best-of” lists being bandied about. At first I thought, “Wow, it’s finally happened. Everyone’s a music critic.” Then, with this pervasive thought entrenched in my gourd, I started reading these other lists before making my own.

I suddenly felt small.

So deadlines for the “best of 2007″ rolled around, and I was in a tailspin, dogged by the massive amount of music I had encountered. I kept reflecting on these words of Billy Corgan that I’d read years ago. Billy had once quipped to, I think, Rolling Stone, that, “Not every year can be a great, or even good, year in music.” This thought just stirred in my head and fed into some neurosis. The thought actually fucked with me; maybe 2007 wasn’t that great? Or was it? So I slacked until it was way too late to really do it with any fervor.

Newsflash: Shit aint happening like that this year. I’m past all that, and this year’s going to be different.
