Last year, I procrastinated heavily. I think there were a lot of good records that came out the last couple of years, but I started to think that for every record that came out, there was an equal number of these "best-of" lists being bandied about. At first I thought, "Wow, it's finally happened. Everyone's a music critic." Then, with this pervasive thought entrenched in my gourd, I started reading these other lists before making my own.
I suddenly felt small.
So deadlines for the "best of 2007" rolled around, and I was in a tailspin, dogged by ...

If we can agree that the legacy built by Stax Records christened Memphis "Soulsville U.S.A.", how fitting that in 2008 a new generation is breathing life into (and giving birth to) a new legacy in soul music, re-christening our fair city as Neosoulville. There are so many names that are a part of this important movement in music, and none are more dynamic or gifted than Tonya Dyson. A performer who exudes passion with every note, Tonya has shared the stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake, ...
One of my favorite albums of the last several years has been Charlotte Gainsbourg's phenomenal collaboration with the French duo Air, 2006's 5:55. News has come out that she will now collaborate with Beck on her new album, and recording has already begun. No release date has been set as yet. Now that the excitment has been issued, we wait patiently.
Beck, the funky Scientologist, has revealed he will be collaborating with Charlotte Gainsbourg on her upcoming album. In a recent interview, Beck said he has been in and out of the studio with the French songstress, adding ...
Oh great. I was afraid the world had run dry of "everyone's an A&R person"-style websites (which might be why people have turned to music blogs for their fill of unsigned/unheard acts). Now comes The Next Big Sound, a website which turns anyone into a virtual A&R person. The initial interest and reviews of the site show it to be something quite special, but I'm a tad skeptical.
As demoed at the TECHcocktail event in Chicago last week, the concept is simple and ingenious: listen to free music from unsigned bands, and “sign†your favorites to your own virtual ...

I've been bragging about the new Oasis album Dig Out Your Soul ever since it leaked & I'm not one for needless banter about bands that over-hype and under-deliver. Oasis hit this one out of the park. Don't believe me? Click here to visit them on MySpace and find out for yourself. Win, win, win. Dig Out Your Soul is without a doubt the most well-crafted Oasis album in over a decade & now you can see what I mean for yourself.
I just haven't had the time this week to properly mention and promote this wonderful show. You need, and I do mean need to be at the Levitt Shell @ Overton Park tonight for COMO NOW. This press release is culled directly from a press release, but the music speaks quite for itself. Enjoy & I hope to see you tonight.
COMO NOW: The Voices of Panola Co., MS, the latest release from Daptone Records (and first that moves away from the Brooklyn funk and soul) continues to get rave reviews from critics all over. Says Grant Alden ...

It should come as no surprise to anyone that's ever been a fan of Sonic Youth to hear that, according to the Matablog, the noise rock pioneers will finally release a new album via Matador Records in 2009. The as-yet untitled album, the band's 16th, will commence recording some time this fall. The band's 2006 release, Rather Ripped, hailed by fans and critics alike as ranking "among the current decade's best", was their final for longtime record label Geffen Records. After the jump, check out some tour dates for the band, both together and solo.

This is groundbreaking, earth-shattering, and like whoa.
New exclusive Nas. "Queens Get the Money," the opening track to his much-discussed and untitled album, finds Nas in a Kid A mindspace. Rapping over a drumless beat from Jay Electronica he talks about bringing back Arsenio for hip-hop's sake, dubs himself Nasty Nasdaq and shouts out kids in group homes. Will this be the album where Nas creates a new national anthem?
