Skinnerbox - King of Spades and MarmaladesThe duo of Olaf Hilgenfeld and Iftah Gabbai is definitely not your run-of-the-mill techno, disco or jazz. So then, color me intrigued by Skinnerbox & their unusual (and efficient marriage) of disparate styles, particularly when it matches so clearly with the musical calico I’m hearing out of European electronic music lately.

There’s a taste of Richie Hawtin meets Mark Farina meets 808 State in these songs. Do I have your attention?

Under the surface, there are also tastes of Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones influence in this particular collection, dotted with edgy Grace Jones/Nina Hagen/Lene Lovich-esque references (thanks to the vocals of occasional guest Elle P) — an embrace of experimental 80’s synth/Moog influences enmeshed with a love of Italo-Disco and New Wave lives in every corner of this music, it’s easy to fall in love with instantly and, later, return to analyze it’s cleverness. Even with it’s technoodling, Skinnerbox’s recordings here are (at their core) jazz music — completely experimental, and definitely out there.

Check out these tracks, courtesy of the band themselves. If you dig it, be sure and check out this terrific live set of theirs from Paris in October of 2009.

Le Le - Disco Monster & The Remixes

Those wonderful Dutch ghettotechin’ blip wizardy-wizards in Le Le hit us up today with a perfect hot mess — remixes of a track called “Disco Monster” from their last EP, Marble. Le Le’s super-human electro-insanities and skin-tight grooves can be heard in mixes from Erol Alkan, Busy P, DJ Medhi, and a whole mess of other floor traffic controllers the world over.

If you can get your hands on a copy of this on vinyl, you should: it comes packed in the Parra-designed original sleeve you see above — wait, did you just ask me “Who’s Parra?” Uh, you don’t know? Time to get familiar, since he’s designed stuff for like um.. Nike, Converse, Vans, Etnies, and his art is blowing up in Paris, Berlin and New York. But yeah, okay. Back to the music. Just….enjoy, then, these remixes of “Disco Monster”, and blow them up wherever you may spin.

Tonight is the Loudersoft + Funke edition of Putting In Work at Dish. We’re going to be tearing through everything we can find that makes you dance — anthems, jams, classics, breaks, disco, whatever we got. There’s no cover at Dish tonight, the kitchen is open till 11pm, and the music goes from 10pm until 3am. If you’re in Memphis, head to 948 S. Cooper (corner of Cooper & Young). You’re gonna dance. I promise you will.

LETS GO!

Casxio’s dance-rock ninja style has them on the move.

CASXIOThe band Casxio come from Los Angeles and are being hailed as “a little bit more than just the latest band to jump into the dance-music pool” by the LA Times.

That’s high praise coming from a city which was once fueled by the disco it helped to create. Enjoy this track, “Seventeen”, then go check them out at SXSW (where they have several appearances).

Casxio – Seventeen

Casxio will be appearing March 18, 19, 20 & 21st at SXSW. Check schedule for times/details.

I’m glad people are rediscovering the funky side of 80’s electro, even if it’s just an accident. I mean, truly there was a load of absolute crap that came out back then; however there remains a select handful of artists who created uniquely identifiable electronic funk music in the 1980’s. Among them, I have to account for the accomplishments of Heaven 17. The song “Penthouse and Pavement” remains one of my favorite so-called ‘throwbacks’ to drop into a set. The dirty nasty funk signatures in the electronic configurations of this track remain unlike any I’ve heard since.

This video was a staple of MTV back in the day and you might even recognize it. Dig on this, enjoy the track and definitely get your hands on the fully-remastered edition of their crowning achievement, Penthouse and Pavement.

Heaven 17 – Penthouse and Pavement

Last year, I procrastinated heavily. I think there were a lot of good records that came out the last couple of years, but I started to think that for every record that came out, there was an equal number of these “best-of” lists being bandied about. At first I thought, “Wow, it’s finally happened. Everyone’s a music critic.” Then, with this pervasive thought entrenched in my gourd, I started reading these other lists before making my own.

I suddenly felt small.

So deadlines for the “best of 2007″ rolled around, and I was in a tailspin, dogged by the massive amount of music I had encountered. I kept reflecting on these words of Billy Corgan that I’d read years ago. Billy had once quipped to, I think, Rolling Stone, that, “Not every year can be a great, or even good, year in music.” This thought just stirred in my head and fed into some neurosis. The thought actually fucked with me; maybe 2007 wasn’t that great? Or was it? So I slacked until it was way too late to really do it with any fervor.

Newsflash: Shit aint happening like that this year. I’m past all that, and this year’s going to be different.

Well first of all, Qualé? Quite a weekend around here, what with the Convection Monthly at Dish turning into a celebration — Sean O’Daniels and Mr. White tore the house down. It was packed to the rafters for some sweet house music mixed with dirty, funky, nasty ass-shaking techno. So, when this band, Database from São Paulo, Brazil hit my inbox with some crazy disco re-edits, I was feeling a couple of them right away. The first one is a re-edit of Game’s 1982 disco track, “Gotta Take Your Love” and the second is a scorching re-edit of Phyllis Hyman’s 1979 classic “This Feeling Must Be Love”.

From Lucio Morais:

Hello!! Whats up???

So we have some Brand New Re-edits, they should be the preview of UGLYEDIT VOL.2 (2009) and we should release after the album called NOISE FREQUENCY PROCESSOR (2009).

We probably r going to release the album @ May 2009 and we already have a first track preview in our space called LOOPS OF LOVE – http://www.myspace.com/databasetrax (And its not a re-edit, its a original track!)

Yes okay. I admit it: I have not shown Santogold enough posting love on Loudersoft because I watched everyone else posting her music and I kind of didn’t want to get involved. Seeing her immense popularity explode, I assumed the rest of the world would do it for me, and they did.

But I cannot hold back any longer: I have to profess my undying love for Santogold’s debut album, all of her remixes that I’ve heard, for the Top Ranking dubplate she did with Diplo, and just about everything else. I am totally crushed out: I admit openly that I love Santi White and I want her to know of my affections, but I’ve been too busy or timid to say anything.

So, here is the latest remix that I’ve discovered of a song that is strong contender for #1 in my “song of the year” contest, “L.E.S. Artistes”.

The early birthday presents just keep on coming. Now if I could get her to play my birthday party….

Santogold – L.E.S. Artistes (Left/Right Remix)

If you don’t already own it, Santogold’s self-titled debut album is a must-own album of 2008. If you’ve already got it, Top Ranking – A Diplo Dub should be your next purchase. Click those links to buy from Amazon — you’ll be glad you did.
