Hey everyone, my name is Marcus, I’ve been writing at A Pocket Full Of Seeds for the last 2 years and it’s great to now also be contributing to Loudersoft.

To kick off my innings on this new corner of the web I want to write about a band called Cave Painting, more specifically a phenomenal remix they posted last week.

Listening to a band for the first time, especially when actively trying to find material worthy of a blog post, mixtape or whatever, can prove quite a difficult process. If I’m trying too hard to find a gem then I get too influenced by other people opinions, press releases, artwork or play count. I’m looking for clues about how good this tune is going to be before I’ve even heard it. This can either make me want to love a track too much or look for excuses to dismiss it before it’s fair chance.

Hearing both Cave Painting‘s and Maker‘s original material I had exactly this, I could hear the talent but struggled to lock down on a specific track I could really fall for. Four chords and eighteen words into this remix and I was knee-deep in a new favourite song.

Why It Works: For me, the hypnotising introduction ultimately leads to the success of the song. Dimmed instrumentation (which for the first minute and a half or so is held behind a thin layer of street noise) breaks into a screaming flashmob in no time at all, nicking your wallet and maybe a shoe in the ensuing carnage. Although almost a mirror of the intro, the final chord progression trades in the earlier anticipation for washing, anthemic tones via distinctly M83-esque squiggles of reverb which beg for repeat plays.
