Ok, so you’ve figured me out: I’m a hippie at heart, even if I do shave my head and trifle about like a poor man’s Galifinakis at times, I’m a tree-hugging, alternative lifestyle, camping out kinda guy. It’s Thursday morning, June 9th, and I’m on my way to Bonnaroo.
This year’s Bonnaroo trip for me is about being open to new experiences. I really don’t know the music of a number of the people performing and, to be honest, I haven’t had the time in the last several weeks to really give proper attention to the several dozen emails that I’ve received about various up-and-coming artists who are performing because of a job I’ve been working on. I am familiar with names like Eminem, Lil Wayne, Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons and several smaller stage acts like Wavves, !!! (Chk-Chk-Chk), Best Coast, DaM-Funk and Master Blaster and the traditional artists like Buffalo Springfield and Dr. John with The Original Meters and Dennis Coffey.
My usual partner-in-crime Nathan couldn’t join me this year due to other obligations, so I’m rolling into Manchester with Rachel from The Vinyl District and our friend Helen. We’re planning to meet up with Will from We All Want Someone to Shout For, Andy from Pop’Stache and Matt from You Aint No Picasso. Unlike years past, I don’t really have a plan in mind. I want to see old friends, make new friends, and experience Bonnaroo from a different angle.
One thing I do know: I’m looking forward to camping with my friends and seeing some of the best names in music. For all the shit I have talked amongst my friends about not wanting to go, I’m resigned to having a great time.
