Not far south of here is a lil’ ol record label by the name of Fat Possum. They put out some mighty fine records, including things from The Walkmen, Smith Westerns and that band Wavves you might know of. The sort of non-ironic re-emergence of grunge like rock has definitely lent itself to the sound of Wavves and people their labelmates Bass Drum of Death.
The duo who hail from Oxford, Mississippi are led by the charismatic John Barrett who, it is reported was “Fat Possum’s worst employee three years ago”. Well no surprise there — after hearing their music, it’s easy to see that John is clearly a songwriter and performer who is much more valuable to the world on a stage instead of in some office right now. BDOD create a sound that comes at you like a freight train of angst and small town dreams covered in blood-soaked rags filled with missing teeth, mopping the floor in angry sweat that leaves a trail of bodies in its wake. And oh yeah, they’re also good.
Recorded on a laptop with minimal production, the result is a kind of raw and furious sound I tend to associate with Goo-era Sonic Youth, powerful songs full of giant merciless pop hooks that perhaps, at times, belie the means under which they were recorded. That’s what you should expect to hear in this song & video from their album GB City which is out now.
