Of the many things there are to love & respect about Erykah Badu, one is that she takes on her performance and persona as an extension of something much deeper. She’s willing to step outside of herself to explore the universe and interact. In her music, Ms. Badu has an uncanny ability to get to the heart of matters from some deeply personal light and love. She never holds back on her expressiveness when communicating with folks on Twitter — she seems to love a good laugh & when she’s feeling the mood, she wants others to share in her passion and joy — for music and for life.
Watching how she moves through the world, I have come to believe that as time moves forward & we’re looking backwards on this time in music and culture, Erykah Badu will represent (as she does now) a new kind of forward motion in art, fashion, music and spirituality. And isn’t that what we all would hope to do?
Okay, anyways, I know I’m gonna get some kind of comments about what I just said, but if you can’t even tell the people you respect from time to time why it is that you respect them, what the hell reason is there to write a music blog? Enjoy this video where she performs “Fall In Love (Your Funeral)” from her 2010 soul epic New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh [Vinyl] to a group of people in the studio which includes the jetlagged & bleary-eyed Jay Electronica and Supanova Slom.
[ Big ups to Creative Control for the video. ]
