The day’s events started off for me with the Brazilian Girls. Bonnaroo’s hot sun always makes sleeping in a challenge, but fortunately, the Brazilian Girls’ mellow but up-beat rhythms were just what was needed to start the day on the right note. The show included most of the songs off of the Girls’ latest album, Talk To La Bomb.
The Roots. When I saw The Roots at the second Bonnaroo festival, in 2003, I thought their performance lacked a certain something. There was a disconnect with the audience, which left attendees wanting something more. But after their show this year, I think it’s safe to forgive any shortcomings The Roots had prior to the event. The Roots have come a long way since 2003, and I can easily say they put on one of the best performances I have ever seen in my life. The group is perfect for a Bonnaroo show, combining the hard hitting elements of hip hop and musical flexibility of a full band.
Tool. A few days before arriving here, a former Bonnaroo attendee told me he felt that Tool would be disappointing if they had to give an outdoor show. And now I can assure him that Tool gave the best outdoor visual performance possible. The band lit up the late night skies with a light show that was sure to entrance anyone at the event.
