Imagine you were walking around Winter Music Conference 2007 getting into that dirt-groove, personified electronic magic mingling with deep grooves prepared by code masters and b-boys, the wide driving rhythms that connected you back to all that is essential. For all the tracks that came over the P.A., according to all my spies out there only one repeatedly took the crown and never let anyone down. The finest kind of source material for engaging in love’s return was best found this year in the track “The Sun Can’t Compare” by Larry Heard presents Mr. White (Alleviated Records).
For the uninformed or untrained ear, you might not know who Larry Heard is. I can respect that, there’s a lot of music out there to know. But Larry Heard, aka Mr. Fingers, is without a doubt *the* Godfather of Chicago House Music. He is the house that Jack built in which Jack had a groove, the one whose dreams and ambitions have carried his music around the world dozens of times over to touch dancefloors in ways that most DJ’s talk about in hushed whispers.
Partnering with Memphis-native, and soul brother extraordinaire, Chad White, this song’s insurgent blips and loops echo warmly through speakers while Mr. White’s seamless vocal delivery lures you in with his soul-barren delivery. The sweetest refrains of Chad’s voice add an uncommon flair and nuance, a sound familiar as a friend whispering in your ear, bringing pain over the smooth synthetic 303-driven beats in what is quickly becoming the dancefloor anthem of 2007. It appears all over the place — on James Murphy’s (LCD Soundsystem) top ten tracks of 2006, on the new Ellen Alien Fabric 34 and on blogs and mixtapes all over the damn world.
I’d love to give you a Mr. Fingers 101 class right now, but for today, class, let’s just focus on this hard-to-get, already reprinted 12″ vinyl masterpiece that deserves your undivided attention. Get ready to get your groove on, people. You just found the track that will take your mix to the next level.
