I miss the hell out of T-Rex. I do. There’s a lot to love that Marc Bolan left behind, and his influence shines through in the music of David Vandervelde. According to his email, the 22-year-old Chicagoan performs with The Moon Station House Band and has been working on solo material for a few years now. David’s “friends and tennis partners” have told him that his music “shows the maturity and swagger of a man much longer in the tooth,” and I’m not one to say they’re wrong. At times, you might have to look up and check the credits to be sure that it’s not, in fact, Marc Bolan himself performing these tunes — high praise in a world of copycats and imitators of styles that barely reach their marks. David has crafted the kind of earworm I don’t want to treat in the song “Jacket”, and I think you will agree.
David and his friend Dirk have been trying to put together a cover photograph for David’s full-length album. Apparently, they had wanted very much to use this picture they discovered in a “gentlemen’s magazine”, if you will, but nixed the idea because of copyright infringement fears. I wouldn’t be so afraid of that as I would that, perhaps, the nice people at Starbucks Music would shudder to place this in their racks with that cover — but, c’mon, that’s the ass every man dreams of having!
Anyways, you should listen to these two songs that David is kind enough to provide to us all and, if you would like to be a part of the album cover, submit your own sexy photo (sexy, not pornographic please) to imhot [at] davidvandervelde [dot] com and you might end up as the sexy cover model for a wonderful record.
