Channeling what’s best about the Dee-Lite era of disco is one of the things Hi Fashion does best. Their newest song and video, replete with Jean-Paul Goude references, homage to Grace Jones and Klaus Nomi & a song that is positively dee-groovy, “Special Delivery Love” feels like an old friend come back to visit who maybe never left. Earning it’s stripes from CeCe Peniston‘s anthemic “Finally” and only vaguely reminiscent of modern disco-ites like Chicks on Speed or Scissor Sisters, this song feels like the burning asphalt of NYC in the summer of 1990.
There is no question about the connection to early 90′s gay disco here, and no attempt to update it to match some modern version. To my ears, this is about as close as anyone’s ever gotten to successfully recapturing that sound in the modern age.
